The Hospitals/Residents Problem with Quota Lower Bounds

چکیده
The Hospitals/Residents problem is a many-to-one extension of the stable marriage problem. In its instance, each hospital specifies a quota, i.e., an upper bound on the number of positions it provides. It is well-known that in any instance, there exists at least one stable matching , and finding one can be done in polynomial time. In this paper, we consider an extension in which each hospital specifies not only an upper bound but also a lower bound on its number of positions. In this setting, there can be instances that admit no stable matching, but the problem of asking if there is a stable matching is solvable in polynomial time. In case there is no stable matching, we consider the problem of finding a matching that is " as stable as possible " , namely, a matching with a minimum number of blocking pairs. We show that this problem is hard to approximate within the ratio of (|H| + |R|) 1−ǫ for any positive constant ǫ where H and R are the sets of hospitals and residents, respectively. We tackle this hardness from two different angles. First, we give an exponential-time exact algorithm for a special case where all the hospitals have an upper bound quota of one. This algorithm runs in time O(t 2 (|H|(|R| + t)) t+1) for instances whose optimal cost is t. Second, we consider another measure for optimization criteria, i.e., the number of residents who are involved in blocking pairs. We show that this problem is still NP-hard but has a polynomial-time |R|-approximation algorithm .

Popular Matchings with Lower Quotas
We consider the well-studied Hospital Residents (HR) problem in the presence of lower quotas (LQ). The input instance consists of a bipartite graph G = (R∪H, E) where R and H denote sets of residents and hospitals respectively. Every vertex has a preference list that imposes a strict ordering on its neighbors. In addition, each hospital h has an associated upper-quota q+(h) and lower-quota q−(h...
متن کاملA matroid approach to stable matchings with lower quotas
In SODA’10, Huang introduced the laminar classified stable matching problem (LCSM for short) that is motivated by academic hiring. This problem is an extension of the wellknown hospitals/residents problem in which a hospital has laminar classes of residents and it sets lower and upper bounds on the number of residents that it would hire in that class. Against the intuition that stable matching ...
متن کاملSolving the Single Machine Problem with Quadratic Earliness and Tardiness Penalties
Nowadays, scheduling problems have a considerable application in production and service systems. In this paper, we consider the scheduling of n jobs on a single machine assuming no machine idleness, non-preemptive jobs and equal process times. In many of previous researches, because of the delivery dalays and holding costs, earliness and tardiness penalties emerge in the form of linear combin...
متن کاملDoes salary affect the choice of residency in non-university teaching hospitals? A panel analysis of Japan Residency Matching Programme data
BACKGROUND Previous studies have investigated factors that are influential on the choice of training hospitals among residency physicians, but the effect of salary was not conclusive. In this study, we aimed to examine whether a higher salary attracted more residents to non-university hospitals participating in the Japanese Residency Matching Programme. METHODS Data on 475 hospitals/programme...
متن کاملFinalizing tentative matches from truncated preference lists
Consider the standard hospitals/residents problem, or the two-sided many-to-one stable matching problem, and assume that the true preference lists of both sides are complete (containing all members of the opposite side) and strict (having no ties). The lists actually submitted, however, are truncated. Let I be such a truncated instance. When we apply the resident-proposing deferred acceptance a...
